We may not realise it but this is our “blitz” moment. Much has been made of the “Dunkirk” spirit – and if we ever needed it, it is now. We are still lucky enough to have a few of those left who lived through the last global conflict. We have some who can claim they epitomise the “Dunkirk” spirit or lived through the blitz. But the memories are looking increasingly hazy.

How will our response be viewed?

In time, we will look back at these times and wonder how we managed to come through. Assuming we do. In the space of five years we have endured a global pandemic. We have cut ourselves off from our largest trading partner, we are seeing war in Europe for the first time in a generation and we continue to deal with the economic and political fallout from all of the above.

As if these were not enough we are enjoying / enduring a heatwave driving temperatures the like of which we haven’t seen for forty years. Not only are there increasing pressures on food chains that were already hard-pressed from the recent jam in Suez, but we have the war in Ukraine and new/evolving trade deals.

De-carbonisation…

The last, but by no means least, factor that is contributing to our own “Dunkirk” moment is the pressure to decarbonise our economy and to address global warming. This may now be accepted as real (maybe) and which is contributing to at least one of the issues outlined above.

So how to go forward? I can only think that the answer is together. Politically. Economically. Commercially. Can tier one suppliers work within the corridors of power to help determine a planned and sensible way forward? Can they then work with their own tier two suppliers to apply the knowledge they have gained and the expertise they have created to take smaller businesses with them on the journey and can we do it through co-operation and collaboration without compromising any one sector, or the economy as a whole?

Collaboration is our bread-and-butter, we work to bring additional skills and expertise to bear across the marketing spectrum – is this a model to address our own “Dunkirk” moment. Please advise….
