Historics – back to the future? It is perhaps ironic that whilst the F1 season was getting back underway not a week earlier the Goodwood Members Meeting had got the motorsport season as a whole up and running with a full card of qualifying and races. It is also ironic that many of the crowd were treated to a virtuoso display by Craig Davies (among others) in the #9 Ford Mustang which had to be seen to be truly appreciated.
Fully 40 yards from St.Mary’s Craig was setting up the Mustang in a beautifully controlled drift clipping the apex lap after lap and carrying good speed down Fordwater and into St.Marys. It was awesome, in the true sense of the word.
However, Craig was not alone. His theatrics were but part of a wider display from myriad drivers who showed total commitment, incredible bravery and not a little skill regardless of the age of their steed, the ability of those around them or the track and weather conditions. Put all of this together with changeable weather conditions and a damp track and it was a privilege to behold. The on track action was supported by great food (are you reading, Silverstone?), open access to all areas
and the opportunity to see the likes of Gerhard Berger, Dario Franchiti, Emmanuele Pirro (please tell me I spelt that right) and Jochen Mass going about their business. All good.
Historics – back to the future?
Given all of this how does this compare to your recent experiences at race meetings? I know the Members Meeting is just that – a members meeting – but Shelsley Walsh must get close to this sort of atmosphere? How does RX at Lydden compare now that RX is the place to be? What about the legendary F1 locations – Monaco, Spa, Monza? How much do you have to spend to get close to this sort of experience? Is it even possible? Particularly with a family ?
Over to you ……
